The overarching theme of the course will be an exploration of the Coherence of Theism; that is to say, that there are reasonable grounds for the belief in God. In the first two lectures, our lecturer Prahlada Bhakta will address some of the inadequacies in current attempts to understand the Mind/Body Problem in terms of brain function alone. He will contend that the nature of Consciousness requires a wider remit. The following topics will be explored over the course of the first two lectures:
  1. The fundamental differences between Matter and Thought
  2. The subjective and unified sense of ownership of one’s conscious experiences, compared with the granular, objective, content-poor processes of the brain.
  3. The moral and social consequences of Determinism and Free Will
  4. The effect of social norms on our Belief Systems.
Part One: The Brain & The Self
  • The personal experience of this room compared with what the brain is doing at the same time.
  • The unique, subjective, unified sense of ownership compared with the granular, third-person, electrochemical, content-poor processes of the brain.
  • There is a relationship between the brain and the Self that is not adequately explained by Physicalism.
  • Descartes’ two substances: Matter and Thought. Both fundamentally different properties.
  • The problems associated with a Physicalist explanation of Consciousness. The Turing Machine v. The Chinese Room.
  • Living things are born with consciousness. (problems with theory of Emergence)
  • Belief Systems and the need for open-minded reappraisal
